Ashes of the Singularity is the unique version of the large-scale RTS from Stardock and Oxide Games. Until Ashes, it was pretty much natural for large-scale RT to look like Total annihilation: you saw it in Supreme Commander, in Planetary Annihilation, Zero K, Rusted Warfare, etc. They all share pieces of TA’s venerable and beloved DNA.

For me, the ashes were proof that you can do things differently. Supply lines, support forces, victory points and one of the most interesting resource systems that I remember in modern RTS (I’m talking about their Quantum Resource, which is used to power support forces and unit upgrades, and also to increase population ceiling. It is a limited Resource and difficult to choose in this otherwise sprawling game about Abundance and abundance). Ashes was an interesting experience for me and it is a game that I am returning to now that I have a PC that makes it run moderately well.

It has its problems (some kind of ferry system, for example, still seems very necessary to me, and I want new higher-level air units), but overall, I had fun playing skirmishes there, and many of his ideas are interesting.

Usually multiplayer is very important to me, but I admit that I have moved away from it a little. And in addition to the skirmishes in Command and Conquer 3, revisiting the Battlezone Redux campaign and playing with the Total Warhammer 2 DLC, I chose Hunter/Prey, a new DLC scenario for Ashes.

I’ve only played it once so far, but it was quite fun.

What is it?

Ashes of the Singularity: Climbing-hunter/prey (or hunter and prey as it is called in the game) is a new single-player DLC scenario for the game that allows players to discover the new units of each faction.

You play as a substrate faction that recently received a bunch of new units in an update, and you regularly receive infusions from large groups of these units while actioning aggressive 5 AI opponents who all play PHC, whose new units are mainly or entirely composed of a bunch of new towers.

And that’s the whole point of the question. It’s basically a giant sandbox where you can have fun with the new units and see what the PHC can throw at you from its anchored defensive positions.

The game mode only gives you free waves of the new units alongside the dozens and hundreds you pump from your own factories, unlocking higher levels with each AI enemy you defeat.

From a heavily armored T1 charge unit to a Hit-and-run T2 skirmisher, a T3 support unit that explodes and damages structures at passed away, one at T4 that drops a bunch of symbolic units at passed away, there are a lot of fun little nuances to the new substrate units, and with Hunter/Prey, you can focus on the fun of spending time with them by automatically increasing your population limit and simply calling stacks of them to strengthen your rude capabilities.

The hunter/ prey itself is a kind of race against time. There are 5 AI-controlled opponents on the map, and each immediately begins to capture the map and move towards you. Even on normal difficulty, the AI is moderately aggressive when it comes up against you and establishes massive fire bases to protect your territory. The more aggressive you are and bring the action to the enemy, the better you will do it. Towards the end of the game, PHC firebases and behemoths can really hurt your forces.

For me, the most interesting part of the map is the beginning of the game, where the waves of support you get have the most impact and the whole AI is moving towards you, sending armies in a long-range clamp to fence you in the lower center of the map. In addition, it is a little more difficult to be aggressive at the beginning of the game, even with the reinforcements you get, because there is a fine line between finishing the enemy, defending your resource nodes and actioning on all sides. Be too ineffective with your unit assignments and your charge will decrease or the invading enemy will overwhelm your defenses. It’s pretty well done.
