I have a soft spot for non-traditional strategy games; especially competitive games with non-traditional economies. Over the years, I have found that what I like the most are strategy games that allow me to focus on area control and action, rather than building a large economy in several parts (in several minutes). Whether it’s Arcade strategy like AirMech, large-scale tactical games like Wargame and Steel Division, or more tactical strategy games like Company of Heroes 2, I feel more comfortable these days in competitive game systems that don’t offer significant production, resource collection and upgrades.

New in this field, the Arcade strategy game the Maestros was added to Steam Early Access on October 5, 2018. The Maestros is Indie Studio system Games’ flagship title, and it’s fast and light, taking some fierce nods from MOBAs. Let’s take a look at the details of what this game does well and where there are problems.

About the game

The Maestros is not really an RTS, although it’s not really a MOBA either. It falls into a category that I call “rtesk” – it allows players to control multiple units and shares common control systems with what players know about real-time strategy games, but there are clear differences that distinguish it.enough for the distinction in the name of the Genre to be mentioned.

In the Maestros, players take on the role of heroes from one of two opposing factions: the Steampunk or Dieselpunk knights of Teutonia or the more organic alchemists of Regalis. Similar to a MOBA, the Player’s hero is the cornerstone of the game: if your hero dies, you’re either out for the ride (CS:GO-style)… or you can’t act until you respawn (at the Dota).

As stated above, the game currently has 2 modes: One in which the first team to make 5 eliminations in a Match wins, and the other which declares The team that eliminates all enemy heroes the winner over several rounds. When a team finishs a hero in the second “CS:GO” game mode, that finished hero must remain a spectator until all his allies are also finished when a new round begins and everyone’s progress is reset. The first team to win 3 rounds by finishing all enemy heroes is declared the winner of the entire match.

Fraction Design

The player starts a turn using only his hero unit and finishs creeps scattered around the map to build up an army. the Knights of Teutonia gain 2 small ranged units called Doughboys, per crawling finished, up to a maximum strength of 20. alchemists gain a single melee chargeer called Rambam, per finish, up to a ceiling of 10.

The basic mechanics of the game is to transform these basic units into advanced forms. There are small upgrade discs scattered around the map-The Knights of Teutonia can feed their Doughboys to them to return advanced units, and each disc can only be combined into one type of unit. It often costs 3 or 4 Doughboys to regroup into a stronger unit, so your fully upgraded army usually ends with 5 or 6 units of different types.

Alchemists have a different mechanism: Upgrade discs do not directly upgrade units for alchemists, but grant loads of upgrade potions. the alchemical hero then spends the potions whenever he wants to transform one of his main units into his special form.

You start with only one hero and get a new one every 2 levels: levels are won through AI skirmishes or by playing against real players. The developers gave me access to try the alchemists themselves and skip the effort to win them. Honestly, I don’t know which faction I prefer at the moment, but I’m glad that work is underway to make the factions different, which I really prefer in strategy games.

There are currently 3 heroes per faction. Each hero has a unique weapon and a unique special ability: whether to stun enemies near the hero, fire an AoE missile anywhere on the map or inflict AOE damage and repel the hero and all affected units. I really hope that the developers will focus on the balance of heroes and abilities, because in a game with relatively few parameters to adjust when trying to achieve victory, those available to players must be balanced and interesting enough to ensure a pleasant gaming experience.
